How to Know If Your Prostate Is Healthy
Wondering how to tell if your prostate is in good shape? It’s a common concern, especially as men age. The truth is, many prostate issues don’t show obvious symptoms early on, so regular check-ups are key. Your doctor may start by asking for a urine sample to rule out infections or other urinary problems.
One of the most common tests is a blood check for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). While elevated PSA levels can signal prostate cancer, they can also be higher due to a benign enlarged prostate, inflammation, or even recent physical activity. That’s why PSA alone isn’t a definitive diagnosis—it’s just one piece of the puzzle.
If your doctor notices anything unusual, they might recommend further testing. A common next step is an ultrasound exam, often done using a probe inserted into the rectum (called a transrectal ultrasound). This allows for detailed imaging of the prostate’s size and structure. It’s a quick procedure, usually done in the office, and helps your doctor see if there are any abnormalities worth investigating further.
Keep in mind, benign enlargement of the prostate—called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—is very common, especially after age 50. Symptoms like frequent urination, difficulty starting or stopping urine flow, or waking up often at night can be signs of BPH, not necessarily cancer.
The bottom line? Don’t wait for symptoms to talk to your doctor. Routine screenings, especially if you’re over 50 or have a family history, can catch problems early. Open conversations and simple tests can go a long way in keeping your prostate—and you—in good health.
