How to Turn Off Search in ChatGPT

If you’ve noticed ChatGPT pulling in web results during conversations and you’d prefer it to rely solely on its internal knowledge, you might be wondering how to disable the search feature. The good news is, it’s easy to control—right from your settings.

Open your ChatGPT account and head to Settings → Personalization. There, you’ll find options to view, search, prioritize, or completely turn off web search. This level of control lets you customize how ChatGPT interacts with external information. Want to keep search on for certain topics but limit its influence? You can prioritize your preferences there too.

It’s important to note that turning off search doesn’t affect other personalization features—and vice versa. Each setting operates independently, so disabling one won’t unexpectedly change another. This means you can fine-tune your experience without losing all customization.

Why would someone turn search off? Some users prefer responses based purely on the model’s training data, especially when looking for creative or general knowledge answers without real-time web interference. Others might find search results distracting or unnecessary for their use case.

Whether you're streamlining your workflow or just want a cleaner, more predictable chat experience, adjusting the search setting gives you greater control over how ChatGPT behaves. It’s a small tweak that can make a big difference in how you interact with the tool day to day.
