Bringing dull copper back to life

Over time, exposure to air and moisture takes a toll on copper, leaving behind a heavy layer of oxidation and tarnish. While that patina can sometimes look charming on antique pieces, you often want to restore that bright, warm metallic shine. Fortunately, you do not need harsh chemical polishers to get the job done; a simple, natural mix from your kitchen pantry works wonders.

To make your cleaner, combine equal parts white vinegar and water with 1 tablespoon of salt in a small bowl, stirring until the salt dissolves. The mild acetic acid in the vinegar cuts through the grime, while the salt adds just enough gentle grit to break down the tough, oxidized crust without scratching the metal underneath.

Next, take a clean microfiber cloth and dip it into the solution, ensuring it is well-saturated but not dripping wet. Gently rub the cloth onto the tarnished areas, applying light pressure in a circular motion. You will quickly see the dark buildup lifting away. Once the copper looks sparkling clean, rinse it thoroughly with plain water and buff it dry with a soft towel to keep water spots at bay.
