Understanding Mortar Effective Range and Propellant Charges
When discussing indirect fire support on the battlefield, mortars remain one of the most effective short-to-medium-range weapons. A mortar's reach is determined primarily by the amount of propellant used, often adjusted through incremental propellant charges attached to the round before firing.
With just a primary charge, a standard mortar shell exits the barrel at a muzzle velocity of around 73 meters per second (240 feet per second). This yields a relatively short effective range between 180 and 520 meters. To reach targets further out, crews add additional charge increments to boost velocity and distance.
Adding a Charge 1 increases muzzle velocity to roughly 110 m/s, pushing the projectile's reach up to 1,120 meters. Incrementing to Charge 2 accelerates the shell to 137 m/s, achieving ranges up to 1,710 meters. Finally, utilizing a Charge 3 propels the round at approximately 162 m/s (530 ft/s), allowing it to strike targets up to 2,265 meters (nearly 2,500 yards) away.
By adjusting these charge levels, mortar crews maintain high flexibility, hitting targets hidden behind cover across varying distances without needing to relocate the weapon system itself.
