Production of Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)
Polyacrylonitrile, commonly known as PAN, serves as the primary precursor for manufacturing high-performance carbon fibers. The production process begins long before the final material is heated; it starts in a liquid state where the polymer is carefully prepared for shaping.
To turn the raw PAN co-polymer into usable strands, manufacturers first create a specialized liquid mixture known as a spinning solution or dope solution. This involves dissolving the polymer in a specific solvent to achieve the right viscosity and consistency required for fiber formation.
Industries rely on a few standard solvents to dissolve the polymer effectively. The most frequently used chemicals for this purpose include dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dimethyl formamide (DMF), dimethyl acetate (DMAc), and sodium thiocyanate.
Once the dope solution is fully prepared and uniform, it undergoes a spinning process—either wet or dry-jet wet spinning—to extrude the mixture through tiny spinnerets. This crucial step solidifies the liquid polymer into continuous filaments, laying the physical foundation that will later be stretched, stabilized, and carbonized into ultra-strong carbon fibers.
