YouTube Shorts Can Now Be Up to 3 Minutes Long

As of October 15, 2024, YouTube has officially extended the maximum length of Shorts to three minutes. This change marks a significant shift in how creators can approach short-form content on the platform. No longer limited to just 60 seconds, creators now have more room to experiment, tell stories, and engage audiences without sacrificing the fast-paced, vertical format that defines Shorts.

Any video uploaded on or after October 15 that uses a square or vertical aspect ratio and runs up to three minutes will automatically be categorized as a Short. This means even if your video is 2 minutes and 50 seconds long, it still qualifies—offering much more creative flexibility than before. And importantly, these longer clips are still eligible for monetization under YouTube’s Shorts revenue sharing model, as long as they appear in the Shorts Feed and meet the platform’s eligibility requirements.

This update reflects YouTube’s ongoing effort to stay competitive in the short-form video space, where platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels continue to thrive. By giving creators more time to capture attention, YouTube is acknowledging that engaging content doesn’t always fit neatly into a 60-second window. Whether it’s a quick tutorial, a behind-the-scenes clip, or a comedic skit, the extra runtime allows for more depth without losing the format’s signature punch.

If you're creating for YouTube, now’s a great time to rethink your Shorts strategy. With up to three minutes at your disposal—and the potential to earn revenue—there’s more incentive than ever to craft content that’s not only short but smart, engaging, and built to convert viewers into fans.
