How Long Does a Pseudoaneurysm Repair Take?

When a pseudoaneurysm develops—often after a catheterization procedure or trauma to an artery—the good news is that treatment has become remarkably efficient. The current go-to method isn't major surgery but a minimally invasive procedure performed under ultrasound guidance.

It typically takes about 15 minutes. The technique involves injecting a clotting agent, most commonly thrombin, directly into the pseudoaneurysm sac. Using color-flow Doppler ultrasound, doctors guide a small 20 to 22 gauge needle with precision, ensuring the thrombin is placed exactly where it's needed. The standard dose is between 0.5 mL and 1.0 mL of thrombin (1000 units/mL), though some cases may require more—like our patient, who needed 4 mL for successful sealing.

This speed and simplicity have made ultrasound-guided thrombin injection the treatment of choice in most hospitals. Not only is it fast, but it’s also done on an outpatient basis, often with immediate results. The clot forms within minutes, shutting down blood flow into the false sac and allowing the body to reabsorb the area over time.

Of course, not every pseudoaneurysm is the same. Factors like size, location, and whether there’s surrounding hematoma or infection can influence how long the repair takes or if alternative treatments are needed. But for the vast majority, a quick, 15-minute intervention under imaging guidance offers a safe and effective fix.

With minimal discomfort and quick recovery, it’s a far cry from older surgical approaches—and a testament to how modern medicine continues to make complex problems simpler.
