How Long Does It Take for the PDA to Close?
Shortly after a baby takes their first breath, a remarkable change happens inside their tiny body. Before birth, a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus plays a crucial role by allowing blood to bypass the lungs, which arenโt yet in use. But once the newborn starts breathing on their own, this vessel is no longer needed.
In most infants, the ductus arteriosus begins to close within minutes to hours after delivery and typically seals completely within the first 48 hours of life. This natural closure is triggered by changes in oxygen levels and hormone shifts as the baby adapts to breathing air. When the process works as expected, the transition from fetal to newborn circulation goes smoothly.
However, sometimes the vessel remains openโa condition known as a patent ductus arteriosus, or PDA. The term "patent" simply means "open," so a PDA indicates that the ductus arteriosus has failed to close properly. This is more common in premature babies, whose systems may not be fully developed at birth.
While a small PDA might close on its own over time, a larger one can lead to complications like heart strain or breathing difficulties. In such cases, doctors may monitor the condition closely or recommend medication, catheter-based procedures, or even surgery if needed.
Thankfully, with modern neonatal care, most cases of PDA are managed effectively. Early detection and timely intervention ensure that babies can thrive and grow without long-term issues related to this transitional phase of circulation.
