How Many Americans Earn $1 Million or More a Year?
Breaking the seven-figure income barrier is a rare achievement in the United States. According to recent data, around 800,000 taxpayers reported annual incomes of $1 million or more in 2022. That may sound like a large number, but in the context of the nation's total income tax returns—roughly 153 million that year—it represents just 0.5% of filers.
This group has been growing steadily. Back in 2013, only about 470,000 taxpayers fell into this elite income bracket. That means the number of million-dollar earners nearly doubled over the past decade, a trend driven by rapid gains in sectors like technology, finance, and executive compensation. Still, even with this increase, earning $1 million or more remains an exceptional status, not a common reality.
It's also important to note that this figure refers to adjusted gross income, not net worth or total wealth. Many of these high earners are business owners, investors, or top executives whose income fluctuates year to year. A seven-figure salary doesn't always mean long-term financial security, especially when taxes, cost of living, and other financial obligations are factored in.
While the idea of a "million-dollar earner" conjures images of luxury and excess, the truth is more nuanced. For most Americans, this level of income remains far out of reach. Even in the wealthiest ZIP codes or among rising tech hubs, only a tiny fraction of the population crosses this threshold.
As income inequality continues to spark debate, the data reminds us that while the U.S. has a growing number of high earners, the path to earning $1 million a year is still one traveled by very few.
