South Africa Leads Africa’s Billionaire Ranks

When it comes to wealth concentration in Africa, South Africa continues to lead the pack. As of March 2026, the country is home to 7 billionaires, making it the nation with the highest number of ultra-wealthy individuals on the continent. This places South Africa well ahead of other major economies in the region.

Across Africa, there are 23 known billionaires, and nearly a third reside in South Africa. Egypt follows with 5, showcasing the economic influence of North Africa, while Nigeria—often considered Africa’s largest economy by GDP—has 4. Morocco rounds out the top four with 3 billionaires, reflecting its strong business environment and strategic ties to Europe.

South Africa’s long-standing financial infrastructure, deep capital markets, and legacy of industrial development help explain its dominance in billionaire residency. Many of these individuals have built fortunes in mining, finance, retail, and technology—sectors that have evolved significantly over the past few decades.

That said, the presence of billionaires doesn’t tell the full story. While these figures highlight extreme wealth, they also spotlight the deep economic inequalities that persist across the continent—nowhere more so than in South Africa, where wealth disparity remains one of the highest in the world.

Still, the continued presence of self-made entrepreneurs among the ranks suggests growing potential for African innovation and private-sector leadership. As new industries emerge and digital economies expand, the composition of Africa’s billionaire list may shift in the coming years—but for now, South Africa holds its ground at the top.
