Elon Musk’s Sleep Habits: How He Powers Through Long Days
Elon Musk is known for his relentless work ethic, running multiple high-stakes companies like Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter). But even someone with his drive needs sleep—and according to recent interviews, he’s finally giving himself a bit of it.
Musk averages about 6 hours of sleep per night, going to bed around 3 a.m. and waking up roughly at 9 a.m. While that’s less than the commonly recommended 7 to 9 hours, it’s actually a big improvement from his past routines. In previous years, Musk admitted to pulling all-nighters and surviving on minimal rest, especially during intense product launches or production crunches.
“I don’t recommend it,” he told CNBC in May 2023, reflecting on his earlier habits. “But I’m not doing all-nighters anymore.” That small shift signals a subtle evolution in how he manages his energy—still extreme by most standards, but slightly more sustainable.
For Musk, sleep has always taken a backseat to productivity. Yet, as his responsibilities grow, even he seems to recognize the value of rest. Six hours may not be ideal, but compared to the 4- or 5-hour marathons of earlier years, it’s a step toward balance.
Of course, most sleep experts would still advise against mimicking his schedule. Chronic sleep deprivation, even if tolerated in the short term, can impair cognitive function, mood, and long-term health. But for Musk, it appears to be part of a calculated trade-off—one that keeps him at the helm of multiple industries, running on ambition and a fraction of the rest most people need.
