How Long Can You Keep Your AC Running?

When summer heat peaks, keeping your air conditioner running non-stop feels like a necessity. But can your AC handle running all day, or are you setting yourself up for a breakdown? The answer largely depends on the type of system you own.

Smaller, localized units like portable and window ACs are designed for short-to-medium bursts. Ideally, you should run them for 8 to 12 hours at a time. Keeping them on constantly can cause components to overheat, leading to excessive wear and higher energy bills.

For whole-home cooling, larger systems are built for endurance:

Split systems can safely operate for 16 to 24 hours, making them reliable for hot climates.

Central AC units are engineered for continuous use and can run for 24+ hours when necessary.

Even though modern central systems are capable of running non-stop, running continuously doesn’t always mean the compressor is working at full tilt. Most modern thermostats cycle the unit on and off to maintain a steady temperature. To prevent strain and keep your system efficient, set your thermostat to a reasonable temperature, replace air filters regularly, and schedule routine maintenance.
