How Long Can You Safely Run Your Air Conditioner?

When summer heatwaves hit, keeping your air conditioner running non-stop feels like a necessity. But just how long can a cooling unit operate continuously without causing damage or breaking down?

If your system is set to the “on” setting at the thermostat, central air conditioning will technically keep running indefinitely until the electrical circuit disconnects or the motor burns out. However, smaller units have clearer limits. Wall, window, and portable air conditioners can generally run continuously for eight to 12 hours before the motor starts to overheat and risk mechanical failure.

To keep your home comfortable without destroying your equipment or spiking your electric bill, it is best to set your thermostat to “auto” rather than “on.” This allows the compressor to cycle off naturally once the target temperature is reached, giving the motor time to cool down and significantly extending the lifespan of your unit.
