Using Baking Soda to Relieve Heartburn
Dealing with sudden acid reflux can be deeply uncomfortable, but a simple staple sitting in your kitchen cabinet might offer fast relief. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) acts as a natural antacid due to its alkaline properties, helping to quickly neutralize excess stomach acid when heartburn strikes.
For adults and children aged 12 and older, the general recommendation is to mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into 4 ounces of water. Stir the mixture thoroughly until dissolved and sip it slowly to ease burning sensations in the chest or throat.
While it works well for occasional flare-ups, moderation is essential. Overusing baking soda can lead to unwanted side effects and complications, such as bloating, gas, or high sodium intake. It is intended strictly as a temporary fix for minor symptoms. If acid reflux becomes a daily issue or lasts longer than two weeks, consulting a healthcare provider is the safest path forward.
