How Much Does 1 Gram of Aerogel Really Cost?

When most people hear "aerogel," they picture a futuristic, ultra-light material used in space missions and high-performance insulation. It’s often described as "frozen smoke" β€” incredibly light, fragile, and expensive. But the reality of its cost might surprise you.

A 100-cc sample bottle of silica aerogel particles typically sells for around $15. At first glance, that sounds steep. But let’s break it down. That 100 cubic centimeters works out to about 15 cents per cc. Now, aerogel is so light that its tap density β€” how much fits into a given space β€” is only about 0.06 to 0.07 grams per cubic centimeter.

Doing the math, that $15 sample translates to roughly $2.20 per gram.

When scaled up, that’s about $22 per kilogram, or β€” interestingly β€” right around $10 per pound. Not bad for a material once considered exotic and out of reach. Of course, this price is for small, granular samples used in education or research, not large, custom-shaped blocks for industrial use. Those can carry a much higher premium.

The point is, while aerogel still carries an air of laboratory rarity, it’s becoming increasingly accessible. Thanks to advances in production, what was once a NASA-only material is now something you can order online for a couple dozen bucks. And while $2.20 a gram still sounds pricey compared to everyday materials, it’s a fraction of what it cost just a decade or two ago. As manufacturing improves, who knows β€” aerogel might one day line our attics or even our winter jackets without breaking the bank.
