How Much Water Is Too Much?

Drinking water is essential for staying healthy, but is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Interestingly, there is no single, fixed amount of water that triggers water intoxication. Instead, the risk comes down to how fast your body can process it compared to how much you consume.

Your kidneys are remarkably efficient, but they do have a physical limit. A healthy pair of kidneys can generally process about one liter of fluid per hour. If you consistently drink significantly more than that over several hours, your body simply cannot get rid of the excess quickly enough.

While this condition is quite rare in everyday life, certain groups need to be more mindful of their fluid intake. Among healthy individuals, endurance athletes—such as marathon runners or long-distance cyclists—are statistically at the greatest risk for overhydrating. During intense, prolonged exertion, it is easy to mistakenly drink far more water than the body actually needs or can process.
