How Often Should You Wash Your Doormats?
It’s easy to overlook the humble doormat, but it plays a big role in keeping your home clean—trapping dirt, mud, and debris before it gets tracked inside. However, a dirty doormat just spreads mess instead of stopping it. So, how often should you wash it?
At minimum, give your doormats a thorough cleaning once a month. This is especially true for indoor mats or those in low-traffic areas. Over time, even seemingly clean mats accumulate dust, allergens, and bacteria you can’t see. Regular rinsing or vacuuming helps, but monthly deep cleaning is essential for hygiene.
Outdoor mats take the brunt of the weather and foot traffic, so they may need attention more often—especially after heavy rain or storms. A good rule of thumb: if it looks grimy or smells musty, it’s already overdue.
Most synthetic or coir mats can be hosed down or shaken out. Check the care label, but many flat indoor mats are safe for a quick spin in the washing machine (without detergent, on gentle). Let them dry completely before putting them back—damp mats can develop mold or mildew.
And don’t forget: rotation helps. Having two mats—one inside, one out—lets you swap them out while one dries or waits for cleaning. It’s a small habit that makes a noticeable difference in cleanliness and longevity.
Keeping your floors clean starts at the door. A fresh, clean doormat isn’t just about appearances—it’s a simple way to protect your home and improve indoor air quality. So don’t wait until it’s visibly dirty. Set a monthly reminder, and make mat maintenance part of your routine.
