When Should You Really Replace Your Pillow?
Most of us don’t think about our pillows too often—after all, they’re out of sight and, more importantly, out of mind. But here’s a not-so-comfortable truth: even if your pillow still looks fine, it might be past its prime. Experts agree that you should replace your pillow every 1 to 2 years. Why? Because over time, pillows collect dust mites, dead skin cells, and even mold from nightly sweat. Yuck.
Think about it: you spend a third of your life with your face pressed into this thing. That constant exposure takes a toll. Even with regular washing, the filling breaks down, losing its support. If you wake up with neck pain, allergies flare up at night, or your pillow stays folded in half when you fluff it, it’s probably screaming for retirement.
Different materials last different amounts of time. Feather pillows may flatten faster, while memory foam holds up longer—but none are built to last forever. And let’s be honest, most of us hang on to pillows way too long, especially if they’re “still comfy enough.” But your spine and sinuses will thank you for sticking to the 1-2 year rule.
A fresh pillow isn’t just about comfort—it’s a small investment in better sleep and health. So the next time you’re debating whether to toss that old, lumpy pillow, err on the side of caution. Your head deserves better.
