Understanding Your Daily Salt Intake
Salt is a regular part of everyday cooking and eating, but keeping track of how much you consume is an important part of staying healthy. For adults, health guidelines recommend eating no more than 6 grams of salt per day, which is roughly equivalent to a single level teaspoon.
It is easy to overlook how much salt ends up in our meals because it does not just come from the salt shaker on the table. A large portion of our daily intake is already hidden inside everyday store-bought foods like bread, sauces, cereals, and ready-made meals. Because salt is added during manufacturing as well as during home cooking, checking nutrition labels can make a big difference in keeping your daily intake within a balanced range.
