When It’s Time to Say Goodbye to Your Bras

Just like your favorite pair of jeans or a trusty running shoe, bras don’t last forever—no matter how gently you treat them. Over time, the elastic weakens, the underwire can shift or poke, and the fabric loses its shape, which means less support when you need it most.

If you’re rotating through just two or three bras regularly, aim to replace them every six to nine months. That might sound sooner than expected, but constant wear and washing take a serious toll. Think about it: your bra is under daily stress, stretching and contracting with every movement. Even high-quality materials degrade with time, and once the band feels loose or the straps slip constantly, it’s a clear sign the support is fading.

Of course, how often you wear a particular bra plays a big role. Rotating more pieces into your routine—say, five or more—can extend each one’s lifespan since they get more recovery time between wears. But if you’ve got a favorite you reach for every day, don’t be surprised if it’s ready for retirement within a year.

Proper care helps, too. Washing your bras in cool water on a gentle cycle—or by hand—and fastening the hooks before tossing them in the machine can slow the wear. Still, even with the best habits, your body deserves better support than a stretched-out band can offer.

So, check in with your drawer. If most of your bras are older than a year, or if they’re no longer hugging you the way they used to, it might be time for a refresh. Your comfort—and posture—will thank you.
