How Often Should You Really Wash Your Dish Drying Mat?

If you're like most people, your dish drying mat sits quietly by the sink, doing its job without much thought. But just because it's not scrubbing pots doesn't mean it stays clean forever. The truth is, even a mat that only catches drips can start to harbor moisture, odors, and mildew over time—especially if it's made of absorbent cotton.

"If the drying mat is cotton, you can wash it weekly or more frequently if you notice it gets a bit stinky," recommends one cleaning expert. And she's not wrong. Cotton mats, while soft and absorbent, are prone to holding onto water, which creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and that musty smell no one wants in their kitchen.

Unlike sponges or dishcloths that are constantly in contact with food residue, drying mats aren’t exposed to as much direct grime. Still, daily splashes of soapy water, food particles, and lingering moisture mean they need regular care. A weekly rinse in the washing machine—on warm with like colors—usually does the trick. Toss in a towel or two to balance the load, and let it air dry or tumble dry low to prevent shrinkage.

For extra protection, make it a habit to shake out the mat daily and spread it flat to dry completely. If yours starts smelling off between washes, don’t wait—toss it in the machine. A fresh, clean mat not only looks better, but it also keeps your kitchen healthier in the long run.
