How Rare Is Pseudoaneurysm After Arterial Puncture?
While arterial blood draws are routine in clinical settings, complications—though uncommon—can still occur. One such rare but potentially serious issue is pseudoaneurysm (PA), particularly in the radial artery. With an incidence rate of just 0.048%, radial artery pseudoaneurysm remains a medical rarity, but its occurrence underscores the importance of vigilance even during seemingly simple procedures.
This low percentage doesn’t diminish the significance of the condition. A pseudoaneurysm forms when blood leaks from an injured artery, collecting in the surrounding tissue and creating a pulsating hematoma. Unlike a true aneurysm, it’s contained by the surrounding tissue rather than the artery wall, making it unstable and prone to complications like rupture or thrombosis.
One documented case involved a young male who developed a radial pseudoaneurysm after a single puncture for blood-gas analysis—a procedure typically considered low risk. Notably, the diagnosis was confirmed using Doppler ultrasound, a non-invasive and highly effective imaging method that allows clinicians to detect abnormal blood flow patterns and confirm the presence of a pseudoaneurysm.
Although the odds of developing this complication are extremely low, this case reminds both clinicians and patients that even minor vascular interventions carry some risk. Factors such as patient anatomy, anticoagulant use, or repeated attempts may increase susceptibility, but instances like this—occurring after just one puncture—highlight that no procedure is entirely without consequence.
Thankfully, with early detection and appropriate management—often ultrasound monitoring or minimally invasive interventions—most pseudoaneurysms can be resolved safely. But as this case shows, awareness and prompt diagnosis are key, especially when a patient presents with localized swelling, pain, or a pulsatile mass after arterial access. Even rare events deserve attention.
