Is Your Passport Ready for Travel?

Before you pack your bags, double-check your passport—it could save you from a travel disaster at the airport. Many countries have strict rules about passport validity, and even a day over your expiry can mean being turned away.

Your passport must meet two key requirements: First, it should have been issued less than 10 years before your entry date. This rule, often overlooked, means that even if your passport is still technically valid, some countries won’t accept it if it was issued more than a decade ago. Check the “date of issue” on the information page to be sure.

Second, it must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the destination country. For example, if you’re flying home on June 15, your passport shouldn’t expire before September 15. Some countries, especially in the Schengen Zone, enforce this strictly—no exceptions.

These rules aren’t just fine print. Airlines can be fined if they board travelers with non-compliant passports, so they’ll often refuse boarding to avoid penalties. That means even if you’re eager to go, you might not make it past check-in.

Don’t wait until the last minute. If your passport is nearing expiry or was issued years ago, start the renewal process early. Processing times vary, and delays happen. Better to be safe than stuck.

Travel should be exciting—not stressful. A quick glance at those two dates can make all the difference. Keep your passport in check, and the world stays wide open.
