How to Clean a Stinky Yoga Mat
Nothing ruins a good yoga session faster than a stinky mat. Over time, sweat, dirt, and bacteria build up, leaving behind a less-than-pleasant odor. But don’t worry—reviving your mat is easier than you think.
One of the most effective and gentle ways to clean a yoga mat is with a simple soak. Fill your bathtub with lukewarm water—just enough to fully submerge the mat. Toss in about a teaspoon of mild dish soap. Avoid harsh detergents or bleach, which can degrade the material over time.
Once the water is soapy, lay the mat in and let it soak for five minutes. This loosens grime and starts breaking down odor-causing bacteria. After the soak, use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub the entire surface. Pay extra attention to high-contact areas like where your hands and feet rest—these spots tend to get the dirtiest.
Don’t forget the edges and underside. A quick wipe there can make a big difference in both cleanliness and grip. Once you’re satisfied with the scrub, drain the tub and rinse the mat thoroughly with clean water to wash away any soap residue.
After cleaning, shake off excess water and hang your mat to dry in a well-ventilated area—avoid direct sunlight, which can cause cracking or fading. If you're in a rush, pat it dry with a clean towel first.
For best results, clean your mat every few weeks—or more often if you sweat heavily. Regular maintenance not only keeps it fresh but also extends its life. A clean mat means a fresher practice, both physically and mentally.
