How Is a Pseudoaneurysm Treated?
When a pseudoaneurysm occurs—essentially a contained rupture of a blood vessel—doctors have several effective treatment paths. Unlike a true aneurysm, a pseudoaneurysm forms when blood leaks out of a vessel but remains contained by surrounding tissues. While this condition can sometimes resolve on its own, medical intervention is often necessary to prevent complications.
One of the first approaches, especially for small and stable cases, is observation. Some pseudoaneurysms, particularly those caused by catheterization procedures, may clot naturally over time. In these instances, doctors may opt for watchful waiting with regular ultrasounds to monitor progress.
For cases needing active treatment, ultrasound-guided compression is a non-invasive option. A technician uses real-time imaging to apply pressure directly to the neck of the pseudoaneurysm, encouraging clot formation and closure. Though effective, this method can be uncomfortable and isn't always successful, especially with larger or more complex lesions.
More commonly today, ultrasound-guided thrombin injection is used. In this minimally invasive procedure, a small amount of thrombin—a clotting agent—is injected directly into the pseudoaneurysm under imaging guidance. This quickly seals off the area, with high success rates and minimal recovery time.
When a pseudoaneurysm is large, growing, or in a difficult location, surgical repair may be required. This involves open surgery to close the defect or repair the damaged vessel, typically reserved for complicated cases or when other methods fail.
Thankfully, with modern techniques, most pseudoaneurysms can be managed safely and effectively—often without the need for major surgery. The best approach depends on the size, location, and patient health, making individualized care essential.
