How to Tell If Your Security Camera Is Being Jammed

Security cameras are meant to give you peace of mind, but what if someone is trying to disable them without ever touching the device? One sign to watch for is sudden drops in connectivity. If your cameras keep disconnecting without explanation—especially at odd or recurring times—it might not be a glitch. It could be a deliberate attempt to jam the signal.

Jammers work by flooding the frequencies that cameras use to transmit data, effectively cutting off their connection to your network. This means no live feed, no recordings, and no alerts—leaving blind spots at critical moments. While occasional disconnections can happen due to poor Wi-Fi or power issues, a pattern of outages—say, every night around the same time—should raise suspicion.

Pay attention to context. Are the connectivity drops happening alongside other unusual events, like attempted break-ins or tampering nearby? If so, jamming could be part of a broader effort to bypass your security. Also, consider the location: outdoor or remote cameras are more vulnerable since they’re easier targets and often rely on wireless signals.

To protect against this, use wired systems where possible—they’re much harder to disrupt wirelessly. For wireless setups, look for cameras that send alerts when they go offline and consider adding signal monitoring tools. Some advanced systems can even detect abnormal RF (radio frequency) noise, a common byproduct of jamming devices.

Ultimately, staying alert to patterns and understanding your system’s behavior are your best defenses. If something feels off, investigate it. In security, the smallest anomaly can signal a much bigger threat.
