How to Treat Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Children
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is a common heart condition in infants where a blood vessel called the ductus arteriosus — which normally closes shortly after birth — remains open. In many cases, especially in full-term babies, the opening may close on its own within the first few days or weeks of life. But when it doesn’t, medical intervention may be needed.
If the PDA isn’t causing major symptoms, doctors often wait and monitor the child, especially if the opening is small. However, when the PDA persists and begins to affect heart function or overall growth, treatment becomes necessary. One option is a catheter-based procedure, typically done when the child is older and strong enough to handle the intervention. This minimally invasive method involves threading a small device through a blood vessel to close the opening — a preferred choice for many pediatric cardiologists because it avoids open surgery.
Still, not all cases can be managed this way. If the PDA is large, causing complications like heart failure or poor weight gain, or if medications fail to close it, open-heart surgery may be required. Known as surgical closure, this procedure allows the surgeon to directly tie off or clamp the vessel. While more invasive, it’s highly effective and often necessary in premature infants or when catheter treatment isn’t an option.
Thanks to advances in pediatric cardiology, most children with PDA recover fully after treatment and go on to live healthy lives. The key is early diagnosis and a tailored approach based on the child’s age, size, and severity of the condition.
