How to Spot an AI-Generated Face

With AI-generated images becoming increasingly common, knowing how to tell a real face from a synthetic one is more useful than ever. While some AI creations are nearly indistinguishable from photos of real people, subtle clues often give them away.

One of the most telling signs is the presence of digital artifacts. Look closely at the image—do you notice strange blurring around the edges of the face, or inconsistent lighting that doesn't follow natural shadows? Sometimes, hair blends oddly into the background, or skin shows unnatural textures and repeating patterns. These glitches arise because AI struggles with fine details, especially around complex features like ears, eyes, or strands of hair.

Emotional inconsistency is another red flag. A smiling face might have cold, empty eyes that don’t match the expression. Or the mood of the image—say, a joyful celebration—might feel off because the person’s posture or gaze seems disconnected. Humans convey emotion through subtle, coordinated cues: a slight raise of the eyebrow, the tension in the jaw, the direction of the gaze. AI often fails to replicate this harmony, resulting in expressions that feel "almost right" but emotionally flat.

Also, pay attention to symmetry and proportions. AI-generated faces sometimes have mismatched pupils, uneven earrings, or oddly aligned facial features. While post-production can fix some of these issues, many AI images still slip through with these quirks.

As AI technology improves, these tells may become harder to spot. But for now, a careful eye—and a bit of skepticism—goes a long way. The next time you see a striking portrait online, take a moment to look beyond the surface. The clues are often right in front of you.
