How to Keep Your ChatGPT Conversations Private

If you've ever shared a ChatGPT conversation online, you might wonder how to take it offline or make sure it's no longer accessible. While ChatGPT itself isn’t publicly searchable by default—meaning your chats won’t show up on Google or other search engines—shared links can be a different story. Once you generate a shareable link, anyone with the URL can access that conversation. That’s why it’s important to know how to remove or hide those links when they're no longer needed.

To keep your content private, start by logging into your ChatGPT account. From your profile or the settings menu, head over to Data Controls and select Shared Links. Here, you’ll see a list of all the conversations you’ve shared publicly. Each entry has a set of three dots next to it—click them, and choose Delete Link. This action removes the public URL, making the conversation inaccessible to anyone who had the link.

It’s worth noting that deleting a shared link doesn’t erase the conversation from your personal chat history unless you delete it separately. That means you can still revisit old discussions privately, but others won’t be able to view them once the link is gone.

As AI tools become more integrated into daily communication, managing privacy becomes crucial—especially when sharing sensitive or detailed prompts. Taking a few seconds to clean up shared links is a simple but effective way to maintain control over your digital footprint. So if you're ever unsure about who might have access to a past conversation, a quick trip to the Shared Links section gives you peace of mind.
