How to Keep Your ChatGPT Chats Private and Off Google

If you've ever shared a ChatGPT conversation link with someone—maybe to show off a clever prompt or collaborate on a project—you might not realize that link could end up in search results. That means a simple Google search could expose your chat to strangers. While OpenAI designed shared links to be hard to stumble upon, they aren't completely private by default.

The good news? You can take control. Head to your ChatGPT account Settings, then navigate to Data ControlsShared links. There, you’ll see all the conversations you’ve ever shared. From this menu, you can delete any links you no longer want accessible. Once deleted, those chats can’t be reached through the link—and more importantly, they’ll eventually disappear from search engine indexes.

But don’t stop there. While you're in your settings, consider reviewing and deleting any old or sensitive chats stored in your history, especially if you've discussed personal details, work projects, or confidential ideas. ChatGPT saves your conversation history by default unless you've turned that off.

One final tip: Do a quick audit. Open a new browser tab and search Google for “Your Name + ChatGPT”. If any shared chats surface, that’s your cue to go back and delete those links. This is especially important for professionals, writers, or anyone using ChatGPT in a way they wouldn’t want publicly linked to their name.

Privacy on the web isn’t just about passwords—it’s about visibility. A few quick steps today can keep your AI conversations exactly where they belong: between you and who you choose to share them with.
