How to minimize sleep wrinkles and protect your skin overnight

We have all woken up with those distinct, crinkled lines stamped across our cheeks or forehead after a restless night. Far from standard expression lines, these are actually sleep wrinkles—temporary creases etched into the skin from hours of pressing your face firmly against a traditional cotton pillowcase.

While these morning lines usually smooth out within an hour or so of getting up, they are not entirely harmless. Repeatedly folding the skin into the exact same positions night after night gradually breaks down collagen and elastin. Over time, those temporary creases can quietly morph into permanent wrinkles.

Fortunately, protecting your skin while you rest is straightforward with a few simple adjustments to your nighttime routine:

  • Train yourself to sleep on your back: The absolute best way to prevent sleep lines is to keep your face completely off the mattress and pillow. Back sleeping also prevents fluid from pooling unevenly around your eyes, reducing morning puffiness.
  • Upgrade to a silk or satin pillowcase: If back sleeping feels impossible, swapping out standard cotton for smooth silk makes a noticeable difference. Cotton creates friction that tugs and pulls at delicate facial skin, whereas silk allows your face to glide effortlessly across the surface instead of catching and folding.
  • Hydrate before bed: Well-moisturized skin is naturally more resilient and less prone to holding deep creases. Layering a nourishing night cream or a hydrating facial oil locks in moisture, giving your skin an extra buffer against nighttime pressure.

Small tweaks to your bedding and sleep posture can go a long way in keeping your complexion smooth, fresh, and youthful for the long haul.
