How to Safely Dispose of Peracetic Acid
Peracetic acid is a powerful disinfectant widely used in healthcare, food processing, and laboratory settings. However, because of its reactive nature, proper disposal is crucial to ensure safety and prevent environmental harm.
If you’re handling peracetic acid outside of a ventilated cabinet, the first step is to leave the area immediately to avoid inhaling potentially irritating vapors. Once in a safe location, allow the disinfectant solution to be neutralized—typically with sodium bicarbonate—before disposal. This neutralization process should take about five minutes to ensure the chemical is no longer reactive.
Never pour peracetic acid down the drain without neutralizing it first. Doing so can damage plumbing and pose environmental risks. After neutralization, carefully pour the solution down the drain while running cool water to flush it through the system effectively. This helps dilute any residual traces and minimizes the chance of reaction with other substances in the pipes.
