To properly wear a dog tag, the standard and most traditional method is to wear them on a single chain around your neck, resting flat against your chest. The chain should be adjusted so the tags hang comfortably beneath the collarbone, usually tucked discreetly beneath your shirt or uniform for safety and comfort.

Military tradition often involves using a long chain and a shorter "toe chain" (or silencer), which connects a second tag so that both stay together without clinking loudly against each other. If silencers—rubber rims fitted around the edges of the metal tags—are used, they help reduce noise and prevent the tags from scratching skin or catching on clothing.

When wearing two tags, they should lie flat against one another with the embossed lettering facing outward. While traditionally worn around the neck, some individuals wear a single tag on a bracelet or securely attached to a keychain, depending on personal preference or specific workplace safety requirements.
