How to Somatically Release Stored Emotions and Trauma

When you experience intense stress or emotional trauma, your physical body often absorbs the impact long after the initial event has passed. This tension stays locked inside your muscles, nervous system, and fascia. Learning how to release these stored emotions is a crucial part of holistic healing and mental well-being.

Calming the Nervous System
The first step toward somatic release is signaling safety to your brain. Practicing deep, rhythmic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering cortisol levels and relaxing tight muscles. When your body realizes it is no longer in immediate danger, it can begin to let go of suppressed emotional weight.

Gentle Movement and Grounding
Trauma-informed yoga, light stretching, and mindful walking help reconnect you with your physical self. If feeling intense feelings becomes overwhelming, use grounding techniques to focus on your five senses. Simply noticing the texture of an object, naming sensory details around you, or feeling your feet firmly on the floor brings you back into the present moment.

Allowing Natural Physical Expressions
Somatic therapy emphasizes letting the body complete its stress response cycle. Do not suppress natural physical releases such as crying, trembling, shaking, or spontaneous deep sighs. Shaking, in particular, is a natural tremor mechanism that mammals use to discharge excess adrenaline after a threat. Granting yourself permission to feel and express these bodily sensations allows long-held tension to finally dissolve.
