How to Handle Acetic Acid Safely
Acetic acid, a common chemical found in laboratories and industrial settings—and in diluted form, in household vinegar—can be hazardous in its concentrated form. When working with higher concentrations, proper safety precautions are essential to prevent injury.
The first line of defense is personal protective equipment (PPE). Always wear chemical-resistant gloves to protect your hands from burns or irritation. Since splashes can happen unexpectedly, splash goggles are crucial to shield your eyes from exposure. A synthetic apron provides an added layer of protection for your skin and clothing, resisting absorption and minimizing damage if the acid makes contact.
When working in poorly ventilated areas or with heated acetic acid, vapors can become a serious concern. These vapors are not only irritating but can damage the respiratory tract. In such cases, using a vapor respirator is strongly advised to filter out harmful fumes and ensure safer breathing conditions.
It's also important to work in a well-ventilated space, preferably under a fume hood, and to keep spill kits nearby. In the event of a spill, neutralize the acid carefully using appropriate materials like sodium bicarbonate or commercial neutralizers. Never mix acetic acid with bleach or other strong oxidizers, as this can produce toxic gases.
Finally, always store acetic acid in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and incompatible substances. Use only corrosion-resistant containers, preferably glass or specific plastics labeled for acid storage.
