How to Stop Accidentally Calling Emergency Services on Android
If you've ever pulled your phone out of your pocket only to realize you just dialed 911, you're not alone. Accidental emergency calls are more common than you think—especially with features like Emergency SOS designed for quick access during crises. But with a few simple tweaks, you can keep that lifeline available without the false alarms.
Edit your Emergency SOS settings to add an extra step before a call goes through. By default, some Android phones trigger emergency services after rapidly pressing the power button multiple times. You can adjust this in Settings > Safety & Emergency > Emergency SOS. Look for the option to require a swipe or confirmation before calling. This small delay is often enough to stop an accidental call in its tracks.Another culprit? "Double tap to wake"—a handy feature that turns on your screen with a tap. But if your phone jostles in your bag or pocket, it might wake, unlock, and even start an emergency countdown. Turning this off under Display settings can prevent unintended interactions.
Remove the Phone icon from your Lock screen if it's too easy to tap by mistake. Some Android models allow you to customize lock screen shortcuts. If you rarely need quick access to the dialer, eliminating that button removes one more chance for error. These fixes don’t make your phone less safe—they make it smarter. Emergency features are invaluable, but they’re most effective when they’re under your control. A few minutes adjusting your settings now could save you from an awkward call—and help emergency lines stay clear for people who truly need them.
