Understanding the Difference Between Gastritis and Pancreatitis

When you feel pain in your upper abdomen, it can be tricky to figure out what is going on inside your body. While both gastritis and pancreatitis involve inflammation and discomfort in the belly area, they affect different organs and behave in distinct ways.

The biggest giveaway is how the pain behaves. Gastric pain—often linked to indigestion or inflammation of the stomach lining—tends to be temporary. It might flare up after eating or acting up due to certain foods, but it usually eases up with antacids, simple home remedies, or digestion.

On the other hand, inflammation of the pancreas brings a completely different level of intensity. Pancreatitis pain is typically severe, deep, and relentless. Instead of fading quickly, this type of discomfort often lingers for hours or even days. Crucially, it does not go away with standard antacids or basic remedies.

If you or someone you know is experiencing sharp, persistent, and worsening abdominal pain that refuses to settle down, it is important to seek medical attention right away to get an accurate diagnosis.
