Can You Trigger a Growth Spurt at 17?
At 17, many teens wonder if they can still grow taller—and whether there's a way to give their height a boost. While genetics play the biggest role in determining how tall you'll be, there are a few science-backed ways to support your body's natural growth potential during your late teens.
Diet, sleep, and physical activity are the cornerstones of healthy development—and they matter even more during adolescence. Even if your major growth spurt has passed, your bones can continue to lengthen and strengthen into your late teens and early twenties, especially with the right support.A balanced diet rich in protein, calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients helps fuel growth. Think lean meats, eggs, dairy, leafy greens, and whole grains. Skipping meals or relying on processed foods can deprive your body of what it needs to grow and stay strong.
Then there’s sleep—a critical but often overlooked factor. Most growth hormone is released during deep sleep, especially in the teenage years. Aim for 8–10 hours each night to give your body the time it needs to repair, regenerate, and grow.
Staying active also helps. Weight-bearing exercises like running, jumping, and strength training stimulate bone health and can support posture and spinal alignment. Sports like basketball or swimming are great options, but even regular movement makes a difference.
While you can’t force a sudden growth spurt, especially if your growth plates are starting to close, you can maximize your potential by treating your body well. Growth isn’t just about height—it’s about becoming stronger, healthier, and more resilient overall.
