How to Wash Bath Mats Without a Washing Machine

Don’t have access to a washing machine? No problem—washing bath mats by hand is simple and effective. It might take a bit more effort, but the results are just as fresh and clean, if not better.

Start by giving the mat a good shake outside. This removes loose dirt, dust, and debris that can make the cleaning process harder. If you notice any spots or stains—especially near the heel where buildup is common—take a moment to pretreat them with a gentle stain remover. Let it sit for a few minutes to break down the grime.

Next, fill your bathtub with warm (not hot) water. Warm water helps dissolve detergent and lift dirt without damaging most fibers. Add about a teaspoon of mild detergent—too much can leave residue, making your mat feel stiff after drying. Swirl the water to mix in the soap, then submerge the bath mat completely. Let it soak for around 15 minutes. This gives the water and detergent time to loosen embedded moisture, soap scum, and body oils.

After soaking, gently agitate the mat with your hands. Push it down and swish it around to release any remaining dirt. For textured or memory foam mats, avoid scrubbing too hard—just a firm swish will do. Then drain the tub and rinse the mat thoroughly with clean water until the runoff is clear.

When it comes to drying, wring out excess water carefully—don’t twist memory foam—or lay it flat on a dry towel. Place it in a well-vented area or outside in the sun if possible. Avoid folding while damp to prevent mildew.

With a little elbow grease and patience, your bath mat will come out clean, fresh, and ready to use—no machine needed.
