Is 10 PM Too Late to Do Laundry?

When the day winds down and the house finally quiets, it can be tempting to toss in a load of laundry before bed. But is 10 PM too late? The answer isn’t just about your schedule—it’s about consideration for others.

Many housing communities, especially apartments and condos, observe what’s often called “quiet hours”—typically from 10 PM to 7 AM. These hours are designed to minimize noise and disturbance, giving everyone a chance to rest. Since washing machines and especially dryers can be noisy, running them during this window might disrupt your neighbors’ peace.

So, technically? It’s not illegal in most places to do laundry at 10 PM, but it’s generally not the most neighborly move. Even if your machine seems quiet, sound can travel through walls and floors, and a late-night spin cycle might be more noticeable than you think.

For a more considerate routine, aim to finish laundry by 9 PM, or start early in the morning once the quiet period ends. Some buildings even have laundry rooms with posted hours of operation—always a good idea to check your lease or community rules.

If you’re stuck with evening-only availability, consider noise-reducing pads under your machines or using lower-vibration settings. But whenever possible, shifting your routine just a bit earlier goes a long way in maintaining good relations and a calm living environment.

In short: 10 PM isn’t off-limits by law, but it’s on the edge of courtesy. A small adjustment can make a big difference—especially when someone else is trying to sleep.
