Does 90% Equal a 7 in IB? Not Necessarily
One of the most common misconceptions among IB students is that scoring a 7—the highest grade—requires around 90% on exams. But here’s the surprise: it often takes far less. In subjects like IB Physics, for example, the threshold for a 7 can be much lower than you might expect.
In Higher Level (HL) Physics, students on average need about 68% to secure a 7. For Standard Level (SL), it’s even lower—around 65%. That means getting over a third of the paper wrong and still walking away with the top grade. This isn’t a mistake; it reflects how the IB sets grade boundaries based on exam difficulty and global student performance each year.
So why is the bar lower than 90%? IB exams, especially in sciences, are designed to be challenging and discriminating. Questions often demand deep conceptual understanding, precise application, and strong analytical skills. Because of this, perfect or near-perfect scores are rare, and the grading scale adjusts accordingly. A 68% might actually represent outstanding performance relative to peers worldwide.
This doesn’t mean you should aim for 68%. Of course not. But it does mean that stressing over missing a few tough questions isn’t the end of the world. Focus on mastering core concepts, practicing past papers, and understanding the mark schemes. The path to a 7 isn’t about perfection—it’s about consistency, clarity, and knowing what the IB rewards.
