Is Acetic Acid Safe to Handle?

While acetic acid is best known as the main component in vinegar—where it’s diluted to about 5%—the concentrated form is a very different story. In high concentrations (80% or more), acetic acid becomes corrosive and can cause serious harm upon contact with the skin or eyes. These strong solutions can lead to severe chemical burns and damage to exposed tissues, making careful handling essential.

It’s not just direct contact that poses a risk. Breathing in the vapors over long periods—especially in poorly ventilated areas—can lead to chronic health issues. Workers in industrial settings, for example, may develop respiratory problems like chronic bronchitis from prolonged exposure. The acid’s fumes are irritating and can inflame the airways, leading to persistent coughing and breathing difficulties over time.

Another often overlooked effect is dental erosion. Because acetic acid is highly acidic, repeated exposure—even in vapor form—can wear down tooth enamel, increasing sensitivity and risk of decay. Skin that’s frequently exposed may also show signs of damage, including cracking, discoloration, and irritation.

That said, everyday household vinegar is perfectly safe under normal use. The real dangers arise with concentrated forms found in industrial or laboratory settings. Proper protective gear—like gloves, goggles, and respirators—is crucial when working with high-strength acetic acid. Good ventilation also goes a long way in reducing vapor buildup.

In short, while acetic acid isn’t inherently dangerous in small, diluted amounts, respect for its chemical power is necessary. With proper safety measures, risks can be minimized, but ignoring them can lead to serious consequences.
