Is Acrylonitrile a Carcinogen?
When looking at the safety data surrounding industrial chemicals, understanding cancer risk is a top priority. For acrylonitrile—a widely used synthetic chemical mainly utilized in the production of plastics, acrylic fibers, and synthetic rubbers—health organizations have established clear classifications based on extensive scientific evaluation.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies acrylonitrile as a probable human carcinogen. This designation means that while human data may be limited, strong evidence from animal studies indicates a potential risk for causing cancer.
Furthermore, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization, takes an even stronger stance. IARC has officially categorized acrylonitrile as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), concluding that there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from epidemiological and experimental studies.
Because of these classifications, workplaces and industries that handle acrylonitrile implement strict safety regulations, ventilation controls, and protective equipment to minimize exposure for workers and reduce environmental release.
