Is ADHD Inherited From Mom or Dad?
When a child is diagnosed with ADHD, parents often wonder: where did it come from? It's a question without a simple answer, but science points strongly to genetics playing a major role. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is one of the most heritable mental health conditions, with studies suggesting genetics account for about 70–80% of the risk.
But does it come more from mom or dad? The truth is, it's not that straightforward. Research hasn't found a clear pattern favoring one parent over the other. Some studies have observed a slightly stronger link when ADHD is inherited from the mother, possibly due to how certain genes are expressed or how symptoms present differently by sex. What’s clear is that if a parent has ADHD, their child has a higher chance of having it too—regardless of whether it’s mom or dad. But having a family history doesn’t guarantee a diagnosis, just as not having one doesn’t rule it out.

While scientists continue exploring the nuances of genetics and brain development, one thing is certain: both parents contribute to the genetic mosaic that shapes a child’s neurodevelopment.
