Allianz Takes Over Aviva’s Operations in Poland and Lithuania

In a significant shift within the European insurance landscape, Allianz has officially completed its acquisition of Aviva’s operations in Poland and Lithuania. Announced earlier in the year on March 26, the deal was finalized on November 30, 2021, marking one of the most notable moves in the industry that year.

So, is Aviva the same as Allianz? Not exactly—but parts of Aviva now fall under the Allianz umbrella. This isn’t a full merger between the two giants, but rather a strategic purchase by Allianz of Aviva’s business units in two key Baltic markets. As a result, customers in Poland and Lithuania who once dealt with Aviva may now find themselves under Allianz’s management, with policies and services gradually aligning with the German insurer’s systems.

This acquisition represents Allianz’s largest global transaction in over ten years, underscoring its ambition to strengthen its presence in Central and Eastern Europe. For Allianz, gaining an established customer base and infrastructure in these regions accelerates growth without starting from scratch. Meanwhile, Aviva continues to operate independently in other markets, focusing on its core operations in the UK, Canada, and Ireland.

The transition has been carefully managed to minimize disruption for policyholders. Regulatory approvals were secured in both countries, ensuring a smooth handover. Industry analysts view the deal as a reflection of ongoing consolidation in the insurance sector, where larger players seek scale and efficiency through targeted acquisitions.

While Aviva and Allianz remain separate entities globally, this move marks a new chapter for thousands of customers in Poland and Lithuania—and a clear signal of Allianz’s expanding footprint in Europe.
