Why Mixing Baking Soda and Vinegar Isn't the Miracle Cleaner You Think
It is one of the most popular DIY cleaning hacks on the internet: combine baking soda and vinegar to tackle tough stains, clogged drains, and greasy surfaces. Watching the dramatic fizzing reaction makes it feel like powerful cleaning magic is happening. However, from a chemical standpoint, relying on this mixture as your primary all-purpose cleaner is largely a myth.
When you mix baking soda (a base, sodium bicarbonate) with vinegar (an acid, dilute acetic acid), an immediate chemical reaction takes place. The two substances neutralize each other. The energetic fizzing you see is simply carbon dioxide gas escaping as the acid and base cancel each other out. Once the bubbling stops, you are left mostly with water, a small amount of salt (sodium acetate), and any unreacted leftover ingredients.
By mixing them together in advance, you effectively destroy the best qualities of both ingredients. Baking soda works so well because it is mildly alkaline and acts as a gentle, abrasive scrub. Vinegar is effective because its acidity cuts through mineral deposits, soap scum, and grease. Neutralizing them leaves you with a solution that has lost both its acidic grease-cutting power and its abrasive texture.
If you want to use these household staples effectively, use them sequentially rather than simultaneously. Apply baking soda first to scrub away grime, and then rinse with vinegar to lift remaining residue, or use vinegar alone for mineral buildup. Understanding the basic chemistry behind these items will save you time and yield much cleaner results.
