Is BCG One of the Big 5? Here’s the Real Story

Short answer: BCG isn’t part of the "Big 5"—it’s actually one of the Big Three.

When people talk about the most prestigious management consulting firms, the conversation usually starts with McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and Bain & Company. Together, they’re known as the “MBB” firms—shorthand in the industry for the elite tier of strategy consultancies. These three consistently top annual rankings for best places to work, especially among MBA graduates.

Despite the name "Big 5," which once referred to the largest accounting and consulting networks before mergers reshaped the landscape, today’s top tier in strategy consulting is firmly the Big Three. BCG, founded in 1963 and known for its rigorous analytical approach and thought leadership, sits squarely at that summit.

In 2023 alone, 278 INSEAD MBA graduates joined MBB firms—proof of how coveted these roles remain. Recruiters from BCG, McKinsey, and Bain are regulars on elite business school campuses, competing for top talent with competitive salaries, high-impact projects, and rapid career progression.

While other firms like Deloitte, PwC, EY, and KPMG operate at massive scale—especially in broader consulting and auditing—they don’t quite match the exclusivity and strategic focus of the MBB trio. The Big Three are distinguished by their emphasis on C-suite advisory work, private equity due diligence, and transformative business strategy.

So, no—BCG isn’t a Big 5 firm. It’s in an even more selective club. As part of the Big Three, it stands at the pinnacle of management consulting, shaping global business from boardroom to boardroom.
