Are Cyanobacteria a Biofilm?
While cyanobacteria themselves aren’t a biofilm, they are often key architects of them. In nature, cyanobacteria frequently grow in structured communities known as biofilms—complex, slimy layers that stick to surfaces in aquatic or moist environments. These biofilms are made up of microorganisms embedded in a self-produced matrix of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which help them adhere and protect themselves from environmental stress.

These photosynthetic biofilms can produce valuable compounds—like pigments, antioxidants, and even biofuels—using just sunlight and carbon dioxide.
