Understanding Vaporization and Evaporation
When studying changes in the state of matter, you will often encounter terms that sound similar but have distinct definitions. A common question that arises is whether evaporation is the same thing as vaporization.
In short, evaporation is actually a specific type of vaporization. Vaporization is the broader physical process where matter transitions from a liquid or solid state directly into a gas. This overarching term covers any phase change into the gaseous state, including boiling.
Evaporation, on the other hand, is a more specific process. It occurs strictly at temperatures below the boiling point of a liquid. During everyday evaporation, molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy from their surroundings to turn directly into a gas without needing the entire substance to reach a boiling roll, which is why puddles slowly disappear on a warm day even when the water never gets hot enough to boil.
