Is Evaporation Exothermic? Understanding Phase Changes

When looking at everyday temperature changes, it is easy to confuse different thermodynamic processes. A common point of confusion is whether phase changes like evaporation release heat or absorb it.

The short answer is no, evaporation is not an exothermic process. Instead, evaporation is an endothermic process. This means that liquid molecules must absorb heat energy from their surroundings in order to break away from each other and transform into a gas or vapor.

You can experience this cooling effect in daily life every time you step out of a swimming pool or a shower. As the water droplets on your skin evaporate, they absorb thermal energy from your body, which is why you suddenly feel a distinct chill.

In contrast, exothermic reactions actively release heat energy into the environment. Typical everyday examples of exothermic processes include the burning of wood, coal, or fuel in a fireplace or engine, and the simple act of striking and lighting a matchstick. While combustion and fuel burning generate warmth by releasing energy, evaporation cools things down by taking heat away.
